Johan Bodenstein, owner of INDIflora cc Environment Services of Manor Gardens, Durban, South Africa, has a career rooted in a lifelong passion for plants and the natural world. Johan is a horticulturist- and beyond that a seasoned environmental professional who applies scientific rigor and practical experience to make green spaces thrive and his work showcases a commitment to preserving the natural beauty and ecological integrity of South Africa’s diverse landscapes.
From Horticulture to Conservation
Johan has spent all but five years of his life in Glenwood, Durban- when he’s home! A Hoërskool Port Natal old boy, he earned his National Diploma in Horticulture from the local Natal Technikon in the early 1980s. This foundational knowledge in plant cultivation soon branched out into a broader focus on environmental preservation, culminating in a Master’s degree in Nature Conservation. His master’s thesis focused on the intricate dynamics and impact of bushbuck on the delicate KwaZulu-Natal coastal forest, showcasing his meticulous research skills and a hands-on approach to understanding local ecology.
As a municipal horticulturist, Johan was involved in the implementation of the municipality’s Durban Metropolitan Open Space System (D’MOSS) project, a system that links conservation areas with passive recreation or active sports areas- or open areas of any sort- by utilising land that’s either not being used or is unsuitable for development. “My superior, Jeff Nichols, was responsible for the implementation of the philosophy. I was the hands and feet on the ground.” says Johan.
He worked in Glenwood’s Bulwer Park, then managed Pigeon Valley Nature Reserve for over a year before forming his own business.
The Birth of INDIflora
INDIflora cc was originally established in 1993 as a company growing and exporting Protea cut flowers. When the three other partners emigrated to the USA and a fire destroyed the Protea farm the focus shifted to the environment and the company that has since become a cornerstone in environmental services in the region.

As the owner and principal scientist, Johan has spent over 30 years providing professional guidance, environmental appraisals, and rehabilitation plans for a wide array of projects. He is a go-to expert for plant identification, environmental impact assessments, and ensuring environmental compliance for various developments, from residential estates and mining operations to large infrastructure projects like those of South Africa’s national electricity supplier, Eskom.

More Than Just Plants- People
Johan loves to connect, bridging different fields. Before establishing INDIflora, he spent three years as a lecturer, sharing his knowledge with the next generation of conservationists and horticulturists. He also served as a lead urban agriculture enterprise consultant for a community project, demonstrating his interest in sustainable food systems within urban environments.
Environmental Induction Training
Johan was engaged as specialist horticulturist by Muthi Futhi, a community enterprise in rural KwaZulu-Natal that cultivates and processes indigenous and often endangered medicinal plants for sale as primary raw materials and in the form of finished herbal products. His involvement took him to the United Nations in Nairobi to receive the 2013 SEED award (the SEED Initiative is a global partnership for action on the Green Economy) on behalf of the community.

A forest assessment project in Cameroon for a sports village for the African Cup of Nations was a once-in a-life time experience, while the outbreak of Polyphagous Shothole Borer (PSHB) in 2017 created an opportunity to be at the spearhead of combating this scourge and to be able to create awareness about the beetle and its Fusarium symbiont in KwaZulu-Natal.

Johan is, through the initiative of the Pigeon Valley Urban Improvement Precinct, a nonprofit uplifting upper Glenwood, Johan is resurrecting a D’MOSS project in Glenwood that serves the greater good of the environment and is an opportunity to make a significant improvement. Urban Improvement Precincts (UIPs) – called City Improvement Districts in Johannesburg and Cape Town- have been formed to uplift their neighbourhoods, with each UIP’s core functions being cleaning, greening and security.
His limited private time finds this devout man caring for his family and bees, painting and playing guitar.
